Kara no Kyokai

Last Updated: Dec 09, 2020

10.00 (excellent) Kara no Kyoukai is not your average gory anime with flying body parts and rivers of blood; in fact I wasn't expecting such depth and have been very impressed. The story is good, the animation is almost flawless, the soundtrack is awesome and one of my favorites parts was the work of Maaya Sakamoto, the seiyuu of Shiki. She plays the three Shikis in a way that you can distinguish each of them really easily when you listen carefully. A must watch!

Fullmetal Alchemist

10.00 (excellent) I'm a huge fan of FMA, and I loved both anime because (just like the manga), an episode could make you cry and then laugh without it feeling awkward. The story is so deep, and the bond between Ed and Al is one of the best depictions of a family I've ever seen. Those brothers live for each other, and I can't help but to admire them.

Brotherhood took some time to grow on me, though : I was always comparing the first anime and the "new one", but when I told to myself to appreciate each of them for their own qualities and to consider them as two different stories with the same premises, it became one of my favourites anime.

Clannad

Last Updated: Nov 21, 2011

10.00 (excellent) A masterpiece. Very emotionnal and deep, Clannad is a beautiful ode to family and love between its members. I loved how you could laugh out loud at Sunohara being kicked by Tomoyo, and some episodes later cry at the end of an arc (Kotomi's or Fuko, for example... or the second half of the After Story). I recommend it to you!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Last Updated: Oct 20, 2013

10.00 (excellent) My first Mahou Shojou anime... and what a ride it was! Dark, thought-provoking and still enjoyable, Madoka reminded me of Evangelion with its underlying theme of despair. I would say that it also reminded me of FMA, and especially of the Equivalent Exchange theory. In Madoka, the hope and the miracles all have the same price... a price of pain and despair. And a fate worse than death, at the end of the day, in exchange for a wish. The story is well-written, too! If you haven't already watched it, I definitely recommand it!

Darker than Black

Last Updated: Jan 02, 2012

9.75 (excellent) Darker than Black is one of my favorites series : the plot is complicated and kind of mysterious, and relies both on action sequences and on dialogues. I loved the first season, but the second one left me wanting for more... and I love the four OAVs because they gave me exactly what I was expecting from a second season, as well as what happened between the two seasons.

Eden of the East

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: May 18, 2012

9.75 (excellent) I've watched the series and I intend to watch it again before the movies. I loved Eden of the East because of his complex story and how the pacing was perfect. The main plot is progressing in each episode, and the characters are evolving a lot, especially Saki, the female lead. It's a must watch as everything is almost perfect, but to some the story may be confusing...

Steins Gate

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Dec 09, 2020

9.75 (excellent) I've always loved stories dealing with time-travel, and Steins;Gate manages to deliver a good story with a strong plot. Plus, there is some drama, many shocks and twists and some laughs in store. I'm completely hooked! The characters are great, but they truly shine when they are interacting together, especially Makise Kurisu and Okabe Rintarou. Definitely recommended, and I'll definitely buy Steins;Gate when it will be licensed.

Kobato

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Jan 22, 2012

9.50 (excellent) I admit it : I hated this series at first. I watched the first episode after a very hard day, in hope to change my mind; instead of the solace I hoped, I found Kobato annoyingly whiny and Ioryogi irritating. I kept on accumulating the following episodes and during some holiday, I gave her another chance. And then, Kobato captured my heart in her bottle and she kept it with her in the second episode : there is this kid who hears a lot of bad things about his mother raising him alone, and after he defends her, Kobato tells him that he has a wonderful mom. I was hooked, and Kobato soon become my weekly feel-good series.

Angel Beats!

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Nov 21, 2011

9.50 (excellent) Angel Beats have a large cast of characters, some comedy and some very emotional scenes (I especially think about the scene in episode 2 where Yuri is telling Otonashi about her very sad and cruel past... I had shivers down my spine when she told that

Kimi ni Todoke

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Oct 20, 2013

9.50 (excellent) Kimi ni Todoke can be considered as a bit "cliché"; I mean, it wouldn't be the first time a story focuses on the lonely, misunderstood girl who likes this popular and kind boy, right? However, Kimi ni Todoke succeeds in making it fresh with Sawako and Kazehaya. It is of course a love story, but it is also the progression of Sawako as a person : she gradually opens herself to everyone, makes friends... in a word, she begins to live her life to the fullest.

Last Updated: Apr 08, 2011

9.50 (excellent) Really light-hearted series, I laughed during the whole first episode (and the following). Each character is very likeable, but my favorite was Satou, the blond cook. It seems that there will be a second season, and I can't wait to watch it!

Kanon

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: May 18, 2012

9.50 (excellent) My final thoughts on Kanon (2006) :
My first Key anime was Clannad, and I have watched Angel Beats!, so I was expecting both tears and laughter along with a large array of emotions and interesting characters. I wasn't disappointed at all; it's one of the best things I've watched, and I would watch Kanon again anytime.

Fractale

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Dec 09, 2020

9.50 (excellent) Fractale have, in my humble opinion, one major flaw : its untapped potential. This series could have been so much more! The Fractale system itself was worthy of more development, and a lot of hinted things could have been more explained. However, Fractale was a good series with likeable characters, especially Nessa. Before her first appearance at the very end of the first episode, I was wondering if I would drop this show or not, but she changed everything and kept me hooked because of her lively, naive and cheerful personnality.

Fate/Zero

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Oct 09, 2012

9.50 (excellent) The greatest thing about Fate/Zero is its balance. The pacing between the breathtaking and edge-cutting action sequences and the dialogue is really perfect. The animation is the same as you would expect from a movie, but Fate/Zero is also a feast for the ears with a soundtrack from Kajiura Yuki; she really outdid herself with this one, using some instruments and sounds that we aren't used to hear in her works... and this soundtrack is great. Another great quality is that we have a story with many POVs (the masters), and we care for what happens to a lot of them (I, for example, root for Saber & co, but also for Kariya, Waver Velvet, Rider and Lancer). Definitely waiting for the second season!

Chihayafuru

Last Updated: Jan 22, 2012

9.50 (excellent) I didn't know a thing about Karuta, except that it was a kind of memory game with classic Japanese poems. I was very surprised by the amount of strategy involved in it and by the competitive part of the anime. It's like a sports anime, but with consistent character development, drama, comedy and romance.

Toradora!

Last Updated: Jan 02, 2012

9.25 (very good) Another series I plan to buy one of these days. Toradora! is funny and very touching, and I loved how the relation between Taiga and Ryuuji evolved gradually, without them knowing exactly what's going on. The characters are lovable and are evolving as the series advances. Really, if you like romantic comedies, I recommend it to you!

Romeo x Juliet

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Apr 11, 2010

9.25 (very good) One if the greatest love stories of all time, you would think that every version of Romeo and Juliet is the same. And you're so wrong : Romeo X Juliet is a great adaptation, with just the right mix of original material and new ideas. I especially loved Juliet, who is a strong female lead who discovers her femininity as she learn to love Romeo, but all the characters are lovable (I even enjoyed Romeo's father because he was charismatic as a villain, but so tragic as a human).

Rurouni Kenshin

Last Updated: Oct 09, 2012

9.25 (very good) I do intend to finish the anime one of these days! I really do! I have loved every chapter from the manga, but I only watch the anime when I feel like I need something only Kenshin and his friends are able to give me. I'm in the middle of the Kyoto Arc right now, around episode 35 or 36 if i recall. Even if the animation is kind of old, the story and the caracters are still great and I believe that it's a must watch for every anime fan.

Nabari no Ou

9.25 (very good) A good story, with a bittersweet ending. I especially enjoyed the underlying emotions that are never clearly expressed, only showed or hinted, and the cast of characters (Yoite, Raiko, Miharu and Tobari now have a special place in my heart).

AnoHana

Last Updated: Jan 04, 2013

9.25 (very good) The first episode reminded me of three of my favorite anime : Toradora (for the story, and the characters design), Clannad (for the strong emotions underlying the story line) and Kanon (with the importance of the childhood memories of the hero in the storyline). Well-written, the first episode left me with a strong urge to time-travel to the next week in order to watch the 2nd episode. The mystery around Menma and her wish hooked me, and the shared past of the main characters take us through a journey rich in emotions. Although the series is far from perfect, what I enjoyed the most was the very realistic depiction of the feelings of guilt and regret after a traumatic experience. I would watch it again.

DURARARA!!

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Apr 08, 2011

9.00 (very good) I enjoyed how every character from DuRaRaRa!'s cast was somewhat related to the others, but without them knowing it. The story is great, too, but the somewhat cold and distant storytelling can be an obstacle for some people. I wouldn't mind a second season at all!

Canaan

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Apr 08, 2011

9.00 (very good) Great Animation, a very good story, but there is some questions left unanswered at the end of the series. Also, the relationship between Canaan and Maria was treated very awkwardly : they wanted so much to hint that, in the opinion of Maria, they were more than friends, but without shocking anyone that it was annoying and disturbing.

Full Metal Panic!

9.00 (very good) Chidori and Sousuke are one of my favorites anime couples ever :P. I loved the mix between action and comedy, and I'll still watch some episodes from Full Metal Panic! : Fumoffu! when I'm down in order to laugh out loud.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Seen: completely; Own: partially;

Last Updated: Jan 17, 2012

9.00 (very good) The series took some time to grow on me, but overall, I enjoyed it in the end. The second time I watched Evangelion, I was paying more attention to the charcters themselves and their relationships, and then I started to love it. I've seen "Death and Rebirth of Evangelion" and "The End of Evangelion", too. I've finally seen the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, and I plan to watch the third and fourth one as well, when they will come out.

Last Updated: Sep 19, 2010

9.00 (very good) Watched the first episode, and I loved the typical CLAMP storytelling : you're thrown in a new universe and you don't understand a lot of things, and all those unknown things are what would keep me watching this show (aside the fact that I've heard or read a lot of good things about X, and that I begin to love CLAMP ..._.

Bakuman

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Jun 19, 2011

9.00 (very good) I have seen 4 or five episodes so far, and enjoyed it. However, Bakuman did not manage to catch my attention at that moment, and Mashiro was somewhat getting on my nerves (but Takagi didn't), so I stopped watching. I may be picking it again later, though, because it was kind of funny and light-hearted.

9.00 (very good) After three episodes, I was completely hooked. Ohana is an interesting main character, and if I have a daughter, I hope that she will be honest and able to speak her mind just like her. I don't know why, but the first episode reminded me of Geisha, with this girl parachuted in a very different environment than what she had known until now. It made me cry, laugh, smile... well, a lot of emotions! Another thing that kept me hooked was the strong impression that I was reading a book, not only watching a TV show; the characters are believable, and their actions are as eloquent as their words.

8.75 (very good) Let's be honest :Shirou annoyed me, but Saber kept me hooked. I can't resist to strong female characters, and this noble girl with an armor and a sword sure grabbed my attention. The Servants were original, too, and I was trying to guess which hero was Caster or Lancer, for example. However, Saber as King Arthur was a great surprise, and very well played, too. BTW, FSN is one of the few stories featuring both Caliburn and Excalibur. Unlimited Blade Works was an epic movie, but disappointed me because it was so short. If I hadn't played this route in the visual novel, I would have been lost.

School Rumble

Last Updated: May 18, 2012

8.75 (very good) One word : hilarious. Oh, and curry. School Rumble is so light-hearted and easy to watch... It relies on puns, parodies, comedic situations, its characters antics and on misunderstandings to deliver its gags. It's almost impossible not to laugh at least once while watching this series.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Dec 09, 2020

8.75 (very good) By the end of the first episode, I had a strong urge to do very awful things to Mirai, the main character : she was such a whiny teenager, kind of a rebellious princess if you know what I mean. Besides, she was so mean to Yuuki, her little brother... However, those emotions were overcome by the events in the last minute of the very first episode : that huge earthquake was very shocking (even though you knew it was coming).

What kept me hooked to this series was the evolution of its characters (especialli Mirai's and her relation with Yuuki), its realism and the human drama so well-depicted. The major drawback, for me, was the characters design, a bit too childish for my taste.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Sep 06, 2010

8.75 (very good) First of all : I like the manga, even though it was very confusing in the second half (but I read it another time, some months ago, and took the time to read xxxHolic too and I understood *a lot* of things, especially about all those clones and the link between Syaoran and Watanuki).

So... TRC was my first contact with CLAMP, and I watched 10 episodes of the anime, but I got bored. It's not because it wasn't good, it was because I was watching the adaptation of a chapter I had read 2 or 3 days ago. Maybe, someday, I'll try it again, but one major drawback is that I know that the anime doesn't always follow the original material.

I watched the OAVs "Tokyo Revelations" and "Shunraiki" two times each, and I would love to see a remake that would follow the manga (like FMA : Brotherhood) or OVAs as epic as these two are...

8.25 (good) A light-hearted, slice-of-life story about a girls' kendo team. 5 girls assembled in order to win a bet, each with their crazy antics. I enjoyed this series because it wasn't hard to follow, and the girls were really funny, especially Kirino and her obsessions, the overly emotive Sayako and Miya-Miya with her black aura.

8.00 (good) This one was a big letdown for me. After the first episode, I was sure that it would be a deep story about a war and its effect on two normal persons, Welkin and Alicia. I expected laughs, some tears and a deeper meaning. It didn't happen. I sat through 20 and some episodes of a slice-of-life war show. Fortunately, there were some good scenes, and I was given from time to time what I expected in the first place, especially with the fate of Isara.
